The power engine of the JAV industry is great enough to shine across digital, streaming, and physical media. The many studios and groups rarely let the exact annual revenue numbers slip, but by relying on various industry insiders, journalists, and general calculations, we can roughly estimate which publications were the most profitable (or most sold) across the years.
Our list aims to cover the long JAV history, so we'll be looking at some truly ancient titles. The list spans from the VHS era in the 1980s, then enters the period of waning physical media, and finally joins us in the 2020s with the latest digital releases. We're mostly looking at the estimated amount of total sold units, or the estimated earned yen, and not sheer views or total rentals.
The Historical Context: How JAV Sales Are Measured
Unlike mainstream releases, there are no official sales records to follow when it comes to JAV films. For example, Hollywood enjoys keeping track of sales, but in the AV space, the only sources are director interviews, scarce publications, press releases from studios, and a few investigations from special sources like ZENRA and Takarajimasha. We also need to consider modern and past measures of success. In the past, each VHS sale was roughly $125, which made 45,000 sold copies a huge success. Today, it's incredibly easy to beat these numbers through digital sales or recurring subscriptions.
1. "My Sun" (Boku no Taiyou) — Satomi Kawai (1987)
Studio: Cosmos Plan (now KM Produce)
"My Sun" was released at a time when all JAV was distributed through rental shops. It was released in 1987, and it's estimated that it sold 45,000 copies, which propelled it to the pinnacle of the industry. In a 1994 Takarajimasha publication - "JAVs of One Million People" - the title definitely ranks as one of the most-sold releases from the VHS era. "My Sun" helped change the AV releases from a curiosity into valid entertainment works, and a large part of that had to do with Satomi Kawai's genuine and heartfelt performance. She was able to connect with fans across the screen and make the scenario feel real.
2. "I Like SM-ish Play" — Kaori Kuroki (1985)
Studio: Crystal Eizo
The fame of this series is largely owed to a popular half-documentary published by Netflix, The Naked Director. Initially, it was a humble ten-thousand copy rental release, but it suddenly burst into flames of glory. The studio kept receiving purchase requests through the mail from various collectors and private fans. While it's not clear what the exact numbers are, one of the estimated numbers is 70,000 copies sold. The Netflix series and the AV release itself have made both Kaori Kuroki and Toru Muranishi two of the most recognizable names from the Japanese adult industry. It's very likely that more new fans will seek the original release.
3. "Real Celebrity Saori Hara: Miraculous AV Debut" — Saori Hara (2009)
Studio: SOD Create
Saori Hara was already known for her modeling career and various media appearances, which made her debut as an AV model an explosive event. In a way, she was one of the original career changes that are now popular in AV spaces. Her debut was the very first AV title to reach six figures, having sold over 100,000 units at the time. The studio that handled Saori Hara's debut smartly made sure to make the production quality a step above the rest at the time. That, together with the heat that sparked in mainstream media outlets, made the debut a true blockbuster.
4. "Japan's Long-Awaited AV Debut of National Idol Rico Yamaguchi" — Rico Yamaguchi (2010)
Studio: Alice Japan
Rico Yamaguchi's career change was very similar to what Saori Hara pulled off before her, so much so that both of their debuts reached 100,000+ sales. Alice Japan handled her debut with great care, making sure the advertising campaign played into mainstream media outrage and the excitement of Rico's fans from her AKB48 days. The whole plan of action would later be polished and used to great success by studios focused on transferring mainstream idols to AV work, such as the always beloved MUTEKI.
5. "Princess Peach" — Yua Mikami (2015)
Studio: MUTEKI
Keeping on track with the former mainstream idols into AV idol debut success stories, it's impossible to skip over Yua Mikami's "Princess Peach" debut release. Not only did her one AV become the best-seller of her decade, but she is probably the reason why international fans became interested in premium JAV productions. Released in 2015, "Princess Peach" had spectacular cinematography and attention to quality. Yua's already existing fanbase was a guaranteed source of revenue, but the lead actress herself had delivered a phenomenal performance that took everyone's breath away.
6. "Sola Aoi: Best Collection" — Sola Aoi (2008)
Studio: Moodyz
One of the best ways to gain revenue is to simply cater to a large fan base, but neither Sola Aoi nor Moodyz, her studio, could have ever imagined that her best-of compilation in 2008 would sweep China like a hurricane. It was the first JAV release to break into the international market, and even after nearly two decades, it remains one of the best-selling AV titles of all time. The entire event left Sola Aoi as an enticing name, which helped her become a mainstream TV celebrity.
7. "Shoko Takahashi AV Debut" — Shoko Takahashi (2016)
Studio: S1 No. 1 Style
Shoko Takahashi already had a major buzz around her name, one that left her unable to appear in mainstream shows without humiliation. And so, she joined S1 No.1 Style and debuted as an AV idol instead. The mix of spices, fan engagement, and attention around her helped break the first week sale records. S1 No.1 Style had openly stated that Shoko's debut is one of their strongest of all time.
8. "Anri Okita Best Collection" — Anri Okita (2014)
Studio: Prestige
Not only is Anri's British-Japanese heritage unique, but it seems that she was naturally meant to receive worldwide recognition. Her best-of compilation became a phenomenon in Western markets, driven by the interest garnered through various import sites. The compilation's sales can be tracked across North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. The video not only introduced Western fans to the AV industry but also gave the JAV studios a firm foothold in the international market.
9. "Ken-chan, the Laundry Man" (1982) — Black Market
Studio: Unlicensed / Underground
It's estimated that this old film is the industry's most sold title, with the estimated number of sales being 200,000. However, this title was produced and distributed through underground means, which meant that sales were not legal and rarely returned to the group that made the original video. The theorized revenue generated by the title is $11 million USD, which makes this title a historical landmark. We are including it for historical reasons and to also show how thriving the underground porn spaces can be. Sadly, the actor and production staff were arrested for distributing obscene content.
10. "Kanna Shiraishi Debut" — Kanna Shiraishi (2024)
Studio: S1 No. 1 Style
It goes without saying that former idols debuting as AV stars bring in the most views. And so, our highest-ranked title is also one of the most recent productions. Kanna Shiraishi's debut happened in December of 2024 and held strong into early 2025 as the highest-performing first-week release on FANZA. The immaculate combo of strong social media presence, good release campaign, and great production quality could only result in an amazing success.

What These Films Have in Common
Looking at the list from both up close and from far away, it's undeniable that the best-selling AVs all feature recognizable faces that have "fallen from grace" in some way. For other titles, the road to success was partly by luck, riding a moment in history or culture. And for others, it was a result of studio effort.
The chaos of the 1980s and the stability of the 2020s show us that, despite all of the changes in both the industry and culture, the formula for success is still pretty much the same as it always was. The studios have new distribution methods, but the people are the same.
