If you've ever been on a proper JAV site you probably noticed that some titles have weird markings like SONE-638 or MIDV-735. It's likely that you had a hunch that this is something important, but did you know the codes can easily tell you the source studio, the series it's a part of, and even an estimate of the release date?
JAV codes may look scary and like something only for die-hard fans and collectors, but they are closer to named shelves and bookmarks. Once you learn them, you can easily walk through the library like an experienced librarian and find everything small and big. The codes are a bundle of tightly packed data that you can unpack for better understanding.
This guide will help you spread out and understand the logic behind the codes, but we'll also show you the most important ones by studio. We'll also be giving practical use examples, as well as outliers like FC2-PPV that don't conform to the rules at all.
How a JAV Code Is Structured
Here's the core formula behind every JAV code:
TEXT - 409 ↑ ↑ Series Episode Number
The letters refer to the series or family it belongs to, but it could also represent the studio. The numbers stand for the release order, like a third or fifth sibling. The bigger the number, the more recent the film!
Here are a couple of important things to know about beforehand:
- One studio can have multiple series, each with unique markings. For example, S1 uses codes like SSIS, SONE, and SSNI.
- Series can become retired, so a code will eventually disappear, like how SSNI was replaced by the newer SSIS.
- Even if a code has a higher number, it doesn't guarantee better quality. One series might release its 12th entry on the same day as another series publishes its 500th film.
- When you're using search engines, most of the times they'll be case-insensitive. SSIS-409 will be the same as ssis-409.
- Interestingly, not all platforms use dashes. If nothing comes up in a search, try typing ssis409 instead and you might get a result.

You might want to take a screenshot of this part if you don't like placing bookmarks. This is a list of the famous and important studios and their current and popular historic codes.
S1 No.1 Style — The Premium Standard
S1 still sits on its throne as Japan's No.1 AV label even now. It's the pinnacle of video polish, and the aesthetic value is consistently amazing! It's a brilliant entry point for anyone. We covered S1 in our Best JAV Studios in 2026 alongside other notable names, and we expect it to hold the position for much longer.
| Code | Notes |
| SONE | Current flagship series - active and ongoing |
| SSIS | Former flagship series - still widely searched |
| SSNI | Older series, many classic releases here |
| TEK | Belongs to MUTEKI label under S1 - famous for former idol debuts |
SONE is currently the hottest series from S1 and includes the most recent work of their biggest AV Idols of today. It always has fresh scenarios to enjoy, no matter the time. The older SSNI and SSIS are still very popular and beloved by fans, especially since they host iconic AVs like Yua Mikami's final performance.
TEK is a bit of an interesting case as it officially belongs to MUTEKI, but the label is under S1's management. They are masters of handling new actresses, mainstream Idols transitioning to AV, and their debut scenes. One of their greatest releases is TEK-067, which featured Yua Mikami's first ever AV release.
IdeaPocket — Romance, Elegance, and Loyalty
The widely experimental SOD label is the proud umbrella for IdeaPocket (or IP for short). IP girls are all naturally romantic and tend to have long-lasting contracts. For example, Tsukasa Aoi has been with the studio for more than a decade now.
| Code | Notes |
| IPX | Classic series, large catalogue |
| IPZZ | Current flagship - premium releases |
| MIDV | Mio Ishikawa's primary series, part of IP family |
| MIZD | Best-of and anniversary collections |
For anyone looking to find anniversary works or enjoys a high-quality compilation, the MIZD code will be the best choice. These releases are always hyped up and each release is like a special event.
Moodyz — Volume, Diversity, and NTR
A studio that practically has every niche under its belt is Moodyz. It enjoys a rapid release flow, but its most impressive work is with the NTR genre. If you enjoy switching things up, this studio will be for you!
| Code | Notes |
| MIDE | Classic core series |
| MIAA | NTR-heavy series and themed scenarios |
| MIDV | Shared with IdeaPocket ecosystem - check actress name to confirm |
| MIGD | Older releases |
As you might have noticed, the MIZD and MIDV look very similar and can interfere with searches. If this happens, try looking at the studio watermarks and check the listed actress. It should help you navigate the tight space.
Prestige — Mature Content and Western Recognition
Prestige productions deal with MILF stars and typically cast mature ladies in their romantic scenarios. They also have the best standing and influence in the Western market and other international spaces. It's very likely that Prestige themes will feel familiar.
| Code | Notes |
| ABP | Core series, massive catalogue |
| ABW | Current active series |
| PRED | Premium releases — highest production value |
| CRS | Best-of compilations |
Out of all works you might encounter here, none will be able to compete with PRED, the most polished gemstone out of all Prestige production. If you want to get a strong first impression, kick off with one of PRED entries!
Premium — Visual Beauty and Fashion Aesthetics
As another offshoot of the experimental SOD label, Premium brings us actresses who look like they should be modeling clothes in high-fashion events. It's no wonder that Premium costumes are the best in JAV!
| Code | Notes |
| PBD | Standard series |
| BMW | Visual-focused premium releases |
| PRED | Shared prefix with Prestige in some catalogues — verify the studio |
The popular Honoka Tsuji's most highly appraised work sits soundly under the BMW (not the car) and PBD codes. In general, Premium series are always a big hit among fans who appreciate visual style and attention to detail.
Kawaii — Debut Events and Idol Aesthetics
Kawaii doesn't use the name for no reason, so expect to find some of the brightest and cutest girls in all of JAV. The studio is focused on presenting new debuts and on keeping a strong online presence.
| Code | Notes |
| CAWD | Current active flagship series |
| KAWD | Older series — many debut films here |
Kawaii is really passionate about marketing the upcoming debut scenes for its girls. Joining the pre-release hype can be very fun! But even if you're just interested in finding new, low-key faces joining the AV industry, you will be on the right track with CAWD and KAWD.
Attackers — Dark Themes and Taboo Scenarios
Attackers isn't for everyone, but for all of those Attackers is for, there has never been a better studio for extreme bondage and extremely dark themes. If what you want is a psychological thriller and power dynamics, this is it.
| Code | Notes |
| RBD | Classic series — bondage-heavy content |
| JBD | Continuation of dark theme series |
| ATID | Core catalogue, wide range of scenarios |
Attackers's most popular girl is Yui Hatano. Look her up alongside the ATID code and you will find the highest-ranked work from Attackers easily. There are other popular girls, like Ai Uehara with her career highlights under Attackers.
SOD Create — Experimental and Creative
SOD is the matriarch of many other popular studios, but the label itself is known mainly for experimental works and unique AV releases. While these attempts sometimes result in now well-known labels under SOD, the direct codes have the most mold-breaking JAV content that stands outside of the rest.
| Code | Notes |
| STAR | Core experimental series |
| SDDE | Scenario-heavy and concept-driven content |
| START | Newer active series |
How to Search Using JAV Codes (updated version)
You should have an idea of what the codes mean and which ones belong to what studio. Now's time to finally use them!
You can start with javsiri.cc:
This is probably the fastest option since you can directly enter a title or code in the search bar and dodge the usual browser search engine filtering. The site's collection of studios is great, although the code format is a mix of dashes and without dashes, so always try both for full results. You can also filter by the studio for easier search results, which will help you learn the codes a bit faster, too.
But if you still don't find anything on javsiri.cc, you can also use these:
- FANZA/DMM - This is the official Japanese platform, and it's the largest source of JAV in the world. It has the perfect descriptions and film data, so you can easily use it to verify any video or release information.
- R18.dev - This site is similiar to FANZA but in the English language. It works well with modern studios and their codes, and it can be very useful.
- Javlibrary - This is a database lovingly maintained by fans. It displays user ratings, but more importantly, it's the best way to find any actress's complete portfolio across series and studios.
Here are some useful tips:
- If you know an actress but not which series she's under, search for her on javsiri.cc or go to Javlibrary to find her listed works.
- The number indicates how prolific a series has been, and it can also mark a long-lasting series from a group. If even then nothing comes up, try checking to see if there's been any rebranding or if the code format needs adjusting.
- If you're looking for older AV releases made before 2010, it's better to search with an actress name plus studio names, as many older works predate the standardized codes.
Special Codes That Break the Standard Rules
Not all JAV are in a letter-number format. Two categories do things very differently!
FC2-PPV Codes
When you look at an FC2-PPV code, it'll look like this: FC2-PPV-4488551. The long string of numbers is just the ID that the FC2 platform puts on any video, and it's not tied to the release date, nor does it really represent any studio. Content of FC2 is directly uploaded by creators and sold independently of other studios.
Because of this, you will not get much info from that jumbled string of an ID. It's more like a tag on any article in a store, which means you need to read the ingredients list, among other details, to know what you're looking at.
The code format is also different on sites like 1Pondo and Caribbeancom, which opt to base their listings on release dates. In a string like 061722-001, the first part of the strand is the date written in MM/DD/YY order. This style is very popular in the uncensored community. If you want to learn more about that, check out our Censored, Uncensored, and Decensored JAV.
Vintage / Pre-Standard Codes
JAV content from the 1980s and the 1990s predates the use of modern codes, and some studios even used abbreviations that didn't stick around for very long. "My Sun" (1987) and "I Like SM-ish Play" (1985), the two biggest JAV titles of all time, both came out before the code era. You will need to rely on actress databases to reliably find vintage titles.

Final Takeaway
JAV codes are very efficient things, but making use of them means that you first need to memorize which studio uses what letter combo. The number part is easy to understand, but when letters start looking similar, you might be in trouble.
The four big giants of JAV are Moodyz, S1, and IdeaPocket, so you will struggle to avoid any of their codes during your usual exploration. If they're inevitable, might as well start by learning what each series code is all about! Build a mental detector for specific letter combinations.
If you're casually watching JAV and fall in love with a video, it's often the right call to check the code and follow it home for similar AVs. The only issue might be if you're looking for vintage JAV or if you're using FC2. But don't worry, we got you covered!
